Although Sanmar enjoys a high global reputation for the construction of excellent tugs, it also has a long experience of pilot boat construction. The most recent example is Pilot Boat 10 designed by Camarc and built by Sanmar for the Mersin International Port Authority in southern Turkey.
Measuring 14.95 x 5.2m with a maximum draft of 1.65m, the new steel and aluminium vessel achieves a maximum speed of 20 knots from a power plant of two Volvo D13 MH marine diesel engines, each developing 550hp at 1,900 rev/min. The power is transmitted to NiBrAl five-bladed propellers via ZF360A gear boxes.
Designed to meet RINA approval, the hull form has evolved from a wide array of previous successful pilot boat designs, to ensure good sea-keeping, high transit speed, manoeuvrability, and maximum stability in all modes of operation. The accommodation is arranged with a twin cabin below forward and a large wheelhouse which has comfortable leather seating for seven pilots. There is also a substantial galley and WC/shower room in the lower accommodation area.
The raised wheelhouse and flying bridge give excellent visibility for manoeuvring and ship to ship transfers of personnel. All round foam fendering provides protection whilst carring out this latter role.
Piping throughout the vessel has been largely completed in Cupro-Nickel and stainless steel piping, chosen for its corrosion resistance and weight efficiency. A concentrated effort has also been made to minimise noise and vibration incorporating Basotec and Mascoat technical solutions in order to keep noise levels down in the wheelhouse.
