Her Majesty Queen Mary has officially named Denmark’s first fully electric tug, SVITZER INGRID, at a prestigious ceremony in Copenhagen attended by more than 100 distinguished representatives from the maritime industry. Sanmar Shipyards participated in the event, having proudly built the vessel and reinforcing its global leadership in zero-emission tugboat construction.
Sanmar Shipyards, the world leader in the construction of zero-emission and fully electric tugboats, built Denmark’s first fully electric tugboat for its long-standing client SVITZER.The vessel was officially named by Her Majesty Queen Mary at the ceremony, where Sanmar was represented by Vice Chairman & CEO Ali Gürün and Corporate Strategy Director İpek Gürün.
SVITZER INGRID is based on the ElectRA 2500SX design from Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd, developed exclusively for SANMAR, with a focus on delivering powerful performance alongside zero-emission operations. The tug measures 25.4m in length with a 12.86m beam and 5.40m draft, and is equipped with a 1,808kWh battery system, FFV1 fire-fighting capability and a 70-ton bollard pull. Capable of performing up to 90% of operations on battery power alone, SVITZER INGRID will cut annual CO₂ emissions in the Øresund region by an estimated 600–900 tonnes compared to conventional tugs, with typical recharging requiring just one hour using renewable shore power.
This milestone marks the 30th tug SANMAR has delivered to SVITZER over nearly two decades of partnership, SANMAR’s ninth fully electric tug worldwide, and the very first in SVITZER’s global fleet. The tug’s name follows SVITZER’s tradition of naming its Scandinavian vessels after figures from Nordic mythology, while also carrying a royal reference to Queen Ingrid.
SANMAR, with more than half of the world’s all-electric tugboats built at its modern and environmentally friendly facilities in Türkiye, continues to set the global benchmark for sustainable towage solutions. To date, SANMAR has delivered nine zero-emission vessels to Canada, Chile, Norway, Türkiye and now Denmark, with six more currently under construction including four units for Türkiye’s state-owned crude oil and natural gas pipeline and trading company BOTAŞ. SANMAR also operates its own fully electric tug DINAMO 2023 in Türkiye, underlining its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
