SANMAR-built ElectRA Series tug TRAPANANDA has been loaded aboard a transport ship for its direct voyage from Las Palmas to the Magellan Strait, en route to Chile, where it will become the first fully-electric tug to operate in Latin America.
TRAPANANDA will be the third fully electric tug that Turkish tug and workboat builder SANMAR has delivered to SAAM Towage, the leading towage services provider across the Americas.
The tug was loaded onto the transport vessel in Tuzla, Türkiye, on Sunday (25 May) to begin its voyage to Puerto Montt, Chile, where it will be delivered to SAAM Towage’s operations serving ENAP (Empresa Nacional del Petróleo).
SANMAR is the global leader in fully-electric tugboat construction, and TRAPANANDA is the eighth ElectRA Series tug it has delivered, with six more currently under construction.
Based on the exclusive-to-SANMAR ElectRA 2500SX design from Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd, TRAPANANDA measures 25.4m in length, with a beam of 12.86m and draft of 5.6m. With a battery capacity of 3,616 kWh, it delivers more than 70 tonnes of bollard pull and can reach speeds of up to 12.5 knots. It has accommodation for a crew of up to seven.
ElectRA tugs are available in a variety of sizes (19–28m) and bollard pull capacities (40–85 TBP). SAAM Towage already operates two ElectRA 2300SX tugs – SAAM VOLTA and CHIEF DAN GEORGE – in Canada.
SANMAR Chairman Ali Gürün said:
“This is another first for the ElectRA Series, which will soon be operating on three continents. We are delighted that major operators such as SAAM Towage share our vision of a sustainable tug and towage industry.”
SANMAR has committed to leading the industry toward a sustainable future through low and zero-emission tugboats, incorporating alternative fuels and technological innovation to protect the environment.
The award-winning ElectRA Series is the product of SANMAR’s close collaboration with Robert Allan Ltd. and battery supplier Corvus Energy. SANMAR is also pioneering the construction of the world’s first large, purpose-built dual-fuel methanol escort tugs.
SAAM Towage Fleet, Sustainability and Development Director Pablo Cáceres said: “This third fully electric tugboat introduction in another of our major regional operations – and specifically delivering a sustainable solution to one of our strategic clients such as ENAP – is evidence of the trust that SAAM Towage has in our reliable partner SANMAR. We are certain that the TRAPANANDA will achieve the sustainability goals that we have imposed on ourselves, making both SAAM and SANMAR proud of our decisions.”
